Location Scout and Risk Assessment

In this post I will be doing a risk assessment as well as include my location scout pictures.

Location 1 - My room

Purpose of the shoot:

To take an image of my model with a solid background.

Media Language:

- Warm lighting to help make the model look more “alive” and vibrant.

- Medium shot to show the outfit of the model clearly.

- Close up shot to capture the makeup and accessories as well as the expression of my model with full clarity.

Pros of Location:

- As the environment is indoors, this means that it is more controlled, allowing me to take the pictures for the photoshoot with less distractions and obstacles from unplanned variables like the wind and etc.

- Similarly, I can control the lighting with a lamp to suit the vibe that I am trying to display the model with. This will help to set the overall tone of the front cover page as the warmness and coolness of the lighting can be adjusted fairly easily (as well as the brightness).

- I can use a solid color backdrop (using paper or cloth) in order to make the photos look cleaner and crisp and this will also fit into the genre conventions of fashion magazine front cover page.

Cons of Location:

- Due to the lack of other elements (such as the nature, leaves and etc.) this may make the front cover page look more “boring”.

- My room is relatively small so if I ever consider to do a long shot instead, it would be almost impossible (less flexibility).

- My house is quite far away from where my peers live so if I want to use them as models, they might not be able to travel that far,

Alternative location:

- My peer’s room.

Risk Assessment

Potential Hazards:

- I have 2 dogs that may come in by accident and may spoil the backdrop of the photoshoot (ripping it due to biting).

- There is always a risk of natural disasters such as earthquakes which may be very dangerous since my room is situated on the second floor, making it more difficult to access an exit quickly. In an event that this happens, it will put me and my peers life in potential danger.

Control Measures:

- I’ll need to make sure to lock my door or keep my dogs somewhere else so they will not be able to enter my room during the photoshoot and ruin the site.

- I’ll need to always turn on notifications just in case a natural disaster does happen. The notification will help me stay informed quickly so that in an event that a natural disaster occurs, I can evacuate quickly with my peers.

Implementation Timeframe:

- Clean up my room (1 day before photoshoot).

- Keep my dogs away from photo-site (Prepare 1 hour before photoshoot).

Alternative location -  My peer’s room.

Location 2 - Sanur Beach, Bali.

Purpose of the shoot:

To take a front cover page picture with a more scenic background.

Media Language:

- Bright, sunny and warm lighting as well as a calm beach atmosphere (Especially with the presence of yellow and blues).

- Medium shot, showing my model wearing a dark attire to contrast with the bright, blue or yellow background which will help the focus be directed to my model.

Pros of Location:

- The lighting is already naturally bright so the problem of shadows which must be edited out in post production will not be much of a problem if the photoshoot is taken during the day when its still bright.

- There are multiple interactive elements such as the sea water, sand and rocks which can be used to help build the composition of my front cover page image.

- The space in the beach is vast so I could be flexible with the exact locations where I want to take the pictures.

Cons of Location:

- There may be potential interference from animals such as birds, insects and etc. The animals can potentially photobomb the pictures so that the good pictures will turn out badly instead.

- The wind may be an obstacle which may cause clothing and hair from my models to fly around in ways that it shouldn’t, ruining my pictures.

Alternative location:

Haeundae Beach in Busan, Korea.

Risk Assessment

Potential Hazards:

- The weather may be blistering hot which may cause me and my models to get sunburnt without enough protection (especially since my models may be wearing clothes that cover little).

- There is a risk that the beach may be crowding, potentially creating the risk of somebody stealing the photography equipment which will definitely hinder the photoshoot.

- The bugs and animals may be dangerous for me and my models and it may also potentially damage the photography equipment.

Control Measures:

- Make sure to check the weather forecast to ensure that I won’t be going when the weather is super dry and hot. I’ll also make sure to bring sunscreen for me and my models.

- To prevent bugs from coming near, I’ll bring bug spray to repel them for me and my models too.

- I’ll make sure to always keep an eye on the photography equipment so there is no way that someone would be able to steal it.

Implementation Timeframe:

Wear sunscreen (Directly before entering the beach).
Wear bug spray (Directly before entering the beach).
Maybe also take supplements so that I will not get sick (Couple days before the photoshoot).

Alternate location:

Haeundae Beach in Busan, Korea
