This is my blogpost about Stuart Hall’s representation theory
What is representation?
Representation is when the media creates meaning for a subject. Without media representation, a subject has no fixed meaning.
What is a stereotype and why is it used?
A stereotype is when groups or individuals are reduced to a limited set of preconceived ideas that are already circulating about them in society. It can be used to circulate certain representations to the audience in an easily conceivable way. Stereotypes were also made because of a lack of diversity in the “writer’s room”, leading to repeated use of representations that may sometimes be inaccurate. (Commonly used in genre-based narratives)
What social groups are represented in the media?
Religion, gender, age, race, social class, LGBTQ+, Disability, places, events, social issues, identity.
Case study: Indonesian media
a. What is the group?
Men. (Positive)
b. How are they represented?
In Indonesian dramas or “sinetron”, men are normally represented as dominant. They are almost always represented as the breadwinner that the women would depend on in the plot of the story. The women in the sinetron would sometimes fight over the main male lead, causing the climax or most of the drama in the story. The men would normally be indifferent. In other sinetrons, the opposite would happen with the men fighting over a woman. This fight would be a battle for “territory” most of the time and would always result in one of the men getting together with the woman. Unlike the fight between women, the conflict between the men would be more direct and violent.
a. What is the group?
LGBTQ+ individuals in Indonesia. (Negative)
